Enhancements in Toddle AI for Progress reports

Updated over 2 weeks ago

As an educator, you can use Toddle AI to generate rich, personalised comments for your students, drawing from their performance across various areas during the reporting period. Toddle AI is built to make the report-writing process faster, more consistent, and tailored to each student.

We’ve introduced several enhancements to improve your experience and give you greater control while generating comments with Toddle AI. These include the ability to:

  1. View and configure the context being passed to AI

  2. Trace references used in the generated comment

  3. Include assessment evaluations and portfolio posts as part of the context

  4. Interact with Toddle AI using voice input

Let’s explore these features in detail.

Overview (video)

Generating a comment

To generate a comment, navigate to the sections in the report where comment fields are present. There are 2 ways in which you can generate a comment using Toddle AI:

  1. Use the Toddle AI icon to generate a comment based on your prompt (available for all comment boxes)

  2. Use the magic wand icon to auto-generate a comment (available for all comment boxes except for subject description and custom comment boxes)

Generate comment using Toddle AI icon

Let’s take the example of a ‘Subject description’ comment box to understand how you can use the Toddle AI icon to generate a comment.

To generate a subject description, navigate to the specific subject section within the student's progress report and simply press ‘Command+J’, type ‘/’, or click on the Toddle AI icon located in the bottom-right corner of the description box.

This will open up a chat window where you can provide brief instructions for creating the subject description. Now, click on the arrow icon, and Toddle AI will generate a well-articulated subject description for you in mere seconds.

After reviewing the description generated by Toddle AI, you can choose to keep it, regenerate it, or discard it using the corresponding icons.

Setting a default language

You can also choose a default language for your feedback while generating comments. Simply click on the language icon, as shown in the screenshot below, and select your preferred language from the list.

You can scroll through the available options or use the search bar to quickly find a specific language. Once selected, all comments, thus generated, will be automatically translated into your chosen language. This makes it easier to share reports with families from diverse linguistic backgrounds.

Once you’ve selected the desired language, use the ‘Regenerate’ option to update the existing comment with the translated version. Alternatively, you can prompt Toddle AI to do the same. This ensures the entire comment is replaced in the newly selected language, maintaining consistency and clarity in your report. Keep in mind that any previously generated comments will not be translated to the newly set default language unless you regenerate them.

Voice input for prompts

You can use the voice input feature to give your instructions to Toddle AI by speaking instead of typing. Simply click on the microphone icon next to the send button, as shown in the screenshot below, and start speaking your prompt.

Once you click on the voice input icon, you can start recording your instructions. After you finish speaking, click the tick mark icon to confirm your input, then press ‘Enter’ to generate the AI response. The output will be generated in the same way as it would with written instructions.

Auto-generate comment using magic wand

The magic wand feature allows you to instantly generate a personalised comment using available student performance data. Let’s see how this works by generating a subject-specific comment for a student.

To begin, navigate to the subject section within the student’s progress report. Click on the magic wand icon in the comment box, and Toddle AI will then generate a tailored comment based on the evaluations you’ve provided for that subject.

When you generate comments using the magic wand, along with having access to features such as setting a default language and voice input for prompts, you can access a range of advanced features, such as configuring context, tracing references, and choosing a voice and output structure.

💡Please note that these features are also available when you use the AI icon, but only in comment boxes where the magic wand is also supported.

Let’s explore these advanced functionalities, which help you personalise and fine-tune your AI-generated comments.

View and configure context

Whether you're using the magic wand or the Toddle AI icon, you can view and customise the context being passed to generate a comment. Click on the ‘Context’ section to see what data is being used. This may include learning goals evaluations, subject evaluation, assignment evaluations tagged to the selected grading period, relevant portfolio posts, or attendance. The exact context available depends on the kind of comment you are generating. By default, all the various context sources, such as Learning goals evaluation, Assignments evaluation, and Portfolio posts, are selected. You can choose to deselect any of these categories based on your preferences. However, please note that you can only disable them at a category level, not at the level of individual learning goals or assignments.

You can also click the expand icon to view detailed context, including specific scores, teacher comments, and posts.

💡Please note that the context includes evaluations that may not be visible in the report due to template configurations but have been recorded on Toddle for the selected grading period. For example, if a learning goal has been hidden from the report display but evaluated during that period, the AI will still use that evaluation as context while generating the comment.

Keep in mind that any changes you make to the context being passed will apply to all upcoming comments you generate across progress reports, until you reconfigure it. These changes do not affect comments already generated unless you choose to regenerate them.

Once you've configured the context, choose the ‘Regenerate’ option to apply your changes.

View references used in the generated comment

To understand how the AI has formed its judgment while generating a comment, click on the ‘References’ option in the bottom-right corner of the comment box. This will open a side panel listing all the data points that have been used to generate the comment; each source is numbered and corresponds to the numbers shown within the comment text. You can identify the corresponding reference by hovering over the numbers.

These references are drawn directly from the evaluations you’ve provided - whether through learning goal ratings, assignment scores, and feedback, or portfolio posts - as configured in the ‘Context’ section.

This feature helps you trace which evaluations were used and ensures transparency in how the AI-generated comment was constructed.

Voice and output structure

You’ll see an option to set the ‘Voice and output structure’ while generating comments.

💡Please note that this functionality is also available for custom comment boxes.

Administrators in your school can either create custom voices or select from Toddle’s predefined styles. Once set up, these voices become available for teachers like you to use while generating comments.

To choose a voice, click on the ‘Voice and output structure’ option located next to the ‘Language’ icon, as shown in the screenshot below. Here, you’ll see the default voice along with any other available styles. The voice marked with a star is the one selected as default by your admin. This default voice is applied to all comments unless you manually choose another.

You can scroll through the available voices directly in the dropdown or click the ‘expand’ icon to explore them in a separate modal.

Group 8191 (2).jpg

In the modal window, you’ll see a list of available voice and output structure options on the left. Click on any option to view its details, including the tone and the defined structure. Select the style that best suits your approach to giving feedback.

Once you've chosen a voice:

  • Click ‘Save & Auto-generate’ to apply the selected voice and instantly generate a comment in that tone.

  • Or click ‘Save’ to set the selected voice as your default for all future comments in the progress report.

This flexibility helps you maintain a consistent tone and ensures that your feedback aligns with your preferred communication style.
