Keep submissions open after evaluation!

Updated over a week ago

As teachers, you can now give students the flexibility to submit or update their work even after an assignment has been evaluated. This ensures that you can record grades on time while still leaving room for students to complete their submissions.

Allow submissions even after evaluation

Previously, once you marked an assignment as evaluated, the submission was locked. Students could no longer add or update the work unless you did one of the following:

  1. Requested for resubmission,

  2. Reopened the task, or

  3. Mark the task as pending (re-opened the evaluation)

With this update, you now have greater control over whether submissions close automatically or remain open, once you have evaluated a task.

To begin, navigate to Class→ Assignments tab→ [Assignment name]→All submissions page.

When you click on ‘Mark as evaluated’ for an individual student or in bulk, here’s what happens:

  • For an individual student:

    • If no work has been submitted (Not turned in), a confirmation modal appears. The ‘Close submission for [Student name]’ checkbox is unchecked by default in the modal, so submissions remain open unless you select it.

    • If work has already been submitted, the task closes automatically after evaluation, and the modal does not appear.

  • For multiple students (bulk evaluation):

    • The checkbox is checked by default, preserving the earlier behaviour where submissions closed automatically. Uncheck it if you want to allow submissions from all students even after marking them as evaluated.

If you choose to keep the submission open after evaluation, the selected student(s) can still submit their work. In this case, the Turned in status continues to show as Pending until the due date has passed.

After the due date, the status changes to ‘Overdue’, but students will still be able to submit their work. If the close date passes without a submission, the status changes to ‘Not submitted’ and no further submissions are allowed.

At the student’s end, if submissions remain open, the assignment will continue to appear in the Assignments and deadlines widget on the homepage.

Note: The visibility of the task here depends on the student’s submission status and the due date.

When students navigate to the Assignments page within their class, they will continue to see the assignment in their ‘To-do’ tab even after it has been evaluated.

When students open the assignment, the ‘Add work’ button remains enabled, allowing them to upload their work even after evaluation.

Once a student submits or updates their work after evaluation, you will be notified immediately.

On the All submissions page, any new work added or updated after evaluation is done, is indicated with an exclamation icon in the Evaluation column. Hovering over the icon shows a tooltip confirming that the student has added their submission.

In the Gradebook you will see the same icon next to the student’s record for that task.

An alert message appears at your end in the submissions view whenever a student updates their work after evaluation.

You can review the new submission and, if needed, click ‘Edit’ to re-evaluate it. Once the evaluation is updated, the icon and alert message will disappear.

That’s all for now. We will continue to innovate and improve to make your Toddle experience better each day!
