The Learning goals gradebook on Toddle helps educators assess and reflect on student progress across key learning goals. It presents a clear, grid-based view where you can record and review ratings, and monitor students’ growth over time.
In this article:
Navigate to the Learning goals gradebook
To begin, select a class from your homepage to open its learning goals gradebook.
Inside the class, click on ‘Learning goals gradebook’ from the left-hand side navigation panel.
View ratings in the gradebook
When you open the Learning goals gradebook, you’ll see a grid-based layout where students in your class are listed as columns and learning outcomes appear as rows. Each cell in the grid shows a rating assigned to a student for a specific learning outcome. This layout gives you an overall view of how your students are progressing across the selected learning goals.
At the top of the page, you’ll find tools like the search bar, view selector, grading period dropdown, and filter options that help you quickly narrow down and view specific sets of ratings on learning goals. Let’s take a closer look at what each of these does.
Search bar: Use the search bar to quickly find a specific learning outcome.
View dropdown: Use the ‘View’ dropdown to select the type of learning goals you’d like to view. The learning goals available here depend on your curriculum and the configuration set by your school admin. Here’s a quick overview of what you might see:
In MYP: Subject standards, Approaches to learning, Learner profile attributes
In DP: Assessment objectives, Subject standards, Approaches to learning, Learner profile attributes
In PYP: Subject standards, Approaches to learning, Concepts, Learner profile attributes
In independent curricula: Subject standards and skills
💡Please note that the screenshot below shows an example from the MYP curriculum.
Grading period selector: Use the grading period switcher located at the top to select the grading period for which you would like to view evaluations. Simply click the dropdown and choose your preferred term, semester, or exam window.
Filters: Use the filter icon to apply additional filters by grades, units, students, tags or status. This helps you narrow down the gradebook view to focus on learning goals linked to selected units and/or to evaluate a specific group of students.
For each learning goal, you can view student ratings on different evaluation criteria configured by your school admin. To switch between criteria, use the 'Criteria' dropdown located at the top right of the gradebook grid, as highlighted in the screenshot below.
View evaluation history: Click on the arrow icon in a cell to view the complete ‘Evaluation history’ for the selected learning outcome in a side panel. This can be viewed across all grading periods or filtered by specific ones. Hovering over the history graph highlights evaluations recorded through assignments, portfolios, or observations.
You can also switch between academic years using the academic year switcher. This allows you to track how a student has performed on the selected outcome over time. Just below the graph, you’ll see a detailed breakdown of all recorded ratings for that learning outcome within the selected grading period.
Add evaluation on learning goals
To begin grading, select the relevant learning goal, grading period and the evaluation criteria on which you want to rate the students.
Evaluations are recorded as observations and allow you to assign grades, add qualitative feedback, attach evidence, and track student progress across grading periods. Observations can be added individually or in bulk.
Bulk evaluation
To begin:
1. Open the Learning goals gradebook for your class.
2. Use the checkboxes on the left to select one or more learning goals.
3. In the floating bulk action bar at the bottom:
Review the Students selection. By default, all students that are currently showing in the gradebook are selected.
Click Add observations to continue.
4. In the modal that opens, for each student and learning goal combination:
Review the Current grade column to view the most recent evaluation and the history.
Under Grade, select the appropriate level from the available grade scale.
Use the Description field to add qualitative feedback or observational notes.
Click the ‘+’ icon under Attachments to upload one or more files as supporting evidence from your local device.
5. At the top of the window, you can also see the date and time for the observation.
By default, ratings are recorded for the current date. However, you can record evaluations at any point within the selected grading period.
Once you have added the required details, click Add to save the observations for all selected students and learning goals.
You can also make use of the following features to add ratings efficiently:
Keyboard-first navigation – Navigate and enter ratings using only your keyboard for a faster grading experience.
You can press ‘Enter’ (on Windows) or ‘Return’ (on Mac) on any cell within the ‘Grade’ column to open a dropdown and view the rating options for it.
Within the dropdown, use the up and down arrow keys to move through the options and select your desired rating by pressing ‘Enter’ or ‘Return’. To undo recent changes instantly, use Ctrl + Z (or Cmd + Z on Mac).

Add an observation individually
To add an observation for a specific student and learning outcome, click the arrow icon in the student’s cell to open the side panel.
In the side panel, click the ‘+’ icon to record a new evaluation.

Review or adjust the date and time, if needed.
Click Add to save the evaluation.
You can use keyboard shortcuts to quickly navigate:

Left and right arrow keys – Switch between students for the selected outcome.
Edit an existing observation
From the evaluation history panel, click an existing observation entry.
Select the edit (pencil) icon.
Update the grade, description, or attachments as required.
Click ‘Update’ to save your changes.
Download evaluations
You can download the evaluations you have logged in the learning goals gradebook onto your local device.
Click on the ‘Download icon’ in the top-right corner.
In the ‘Download’ panel, you can select one or more grading periods, choose specific learning goals, and decide whether to include only the most recent ratings or the full history. Once you’ve selected your preferred options, click the ‘Download’ button at the bottom to export the gradebook data as a ZIP file.
Depending on the options you select while downloading, your exported file will include a folder for each academic year chosen. Within each academic year folder, you’ll find separate sheets for every selected learning goal. Click on a spreadsheet to view it in detail.
Each of these spreadsheets will contain two tabs - one for ‘Recent-most ratings of students’ and another for the ‘Full history of ratings’ (if both options have been selected while downloading the files). These tabs allow you to toggle between the latest rating recorded and the complete list of ratings for the selected grading period(s). Here you will find essential details such as student names, evaluation criteria, rating abbreviations, full rating values, date of rating, and source type.
