Troubleshooting issues with Safe Exam Browser (SEB)
Troubleshooting issues with Safe Exam Browser (SEB)
Updated over a week ago

Toddle uses Safe Exam Browser (SEB), a third-party software, to create a secure environment for online exams. SEB locks down the exam environment, preventing students from accessing files, the internet, or other applications on their devices. Although SEB is a powerful tool, students may encounter issues while using or installing it. This article outlines common problems and provides solutions to help teachers and students resolve them.

In this article, we’ll explore:

  1. Common issues faced by SEB users

  2. Platform-specific issues

  3. Final tips

Common issues faced by SEB users

Installation issues

  • Problem: You may receive an error during the installation of SEB, such as ‘Setup Failed’.

  • Solution: Ensure you have sufficient disk space (at least 4.5 GB) and a stable internet connection. Update your operating system to the latest version and try installing SEB again.

Configuration error

  • Problem: After you launch SEB, you may see an error indicating that the application is not configured.

  • Solution: Launch SEB directly from Toddle’s task link. SEB will automatically load the correct configuration for the exam. Avoid opening SEB manually, as it won’t be properly configured.

Session start error

  • Problem: You may encounter a ‘Session Start Error’ when trying to start a new session in SEB.

  • Solution: Update your operating system and ensure you have a stable internet connection. If the problem persists, restart your device and try launching SEB again.

SEB Locked with a red screen

  • Problem: SEB may lock with a red screen asking for a password. This can happen if you lock your screen, the current user is logged off, a forced shutdown occurs, or if another application is running in the background.

  • Solution: Simply exit the SEB and then restart the task again. If the issue keeps recurring, try restarting your device.

Safe Exam Browser becomes unresponsive

  • Problem: SEB may freeze or become unresponsive during a task.

  • Solution: If SEB becomes unresponsive or displays a 404 error page, close the application and relaunch it. If the issue continues, restart your device and try to restart the task.

Antivirus or security software interference

  • Problem: SEB may fail to lock down your computer if security or antivirus software is blocking it.

  • Solution: Temporarily disable your antivirus software or add SEB as an exception in your security settings before launching SEB for a task.

Platform-specific issues

Mac users

Permissions required for web applications

  • Problem: SEB may require access to your system's camera and microphone. If you don’t grant permissions, SEB may malfunction.

  • Solution: Navigate to ‘System Preferences’ on your Mac, go to ‘Security & Privacy’, and ensure that both ‘Camera’ and ‘Microphone’ permissions are enabled for SEB.

SEB not installed in applications folder

  • Problem: SEB for macOS must be installed in the system's Applications folder. If you install it elsewhere, SEB won’t start.

  • Solution: Ensure you install SEB directly in the system's Applications folder, not in a user-specific Applications folder.

Prohibited display configuration

  • Problem: SEB might not launch correctly if multiple displays are connected or if the current display configuration is incompatible with SEB's security settings.

  • Solution: Disconnect any external monitors or devices, ensuring that SEB is only using the internal screen. After adjusting the display settings, you can restart SEB to see if the issue is resolved.

Safe exam browser does not detect displays

  • Problem: On some systems, SEB may fail to start if it doesn’t detect any displays.

  • Solution: Restart your system and try again. If the problem persists, consider using another device to complete the task.

Final Tips

If you continue to face issues with SEB, try the following steps:

  • Restart your device: A simple restart can resolve many issues.

  • Reinstall SEB: Uninstall and reinstall SEB if the software isn’t functioning properly.

  • Contact support: If problems persist, reach out to your school's tech support team for further assistance.
