How can I assign a worksheet task to my students as an educator?

Updated this week

As an educator, you can seamlessly use the Worksheet feature on Toddle to create and assign tasks to your students. This tool allows you to design both objective and subjective (extended response) questions, which students can attempt directly on Toddle. You can configure assignment settings to match your requirements—choosing whether to add time constraints, set flexible or fixed start times, and define open and close dates for submissions. Additionally, you can fine-tune visibility settings and leverage advanced features like browser-focus mode, a lockdown application, timed tests, and an on-screen calculator. Read this article to learn how to configure the assignment settings for a worksheet in detail.

Creating a worksheet

From your homepage begin by navigating to Class > Classroom > Assignments > Worksheet.

Configuring worksheet assignment settings

As you click on the ‘Assign button’, a modal will pop-up. At the top of the modal, you'll see options for how you want to assign the worksheet to students:

  • No time constraints – Students can access and submit anytime.

  • Timed worksheet with flexible start time – Students can start anytime but the worksheet has to be finished in a fixed duration.

  • Timed worksheet with fixed start time - All students will start simultaneously with a set duration to complete it.

Depending on your selection, the Assign modal will display slightly different options. Let’s explore these in detail.

No time constraints

For worksheets with ‘No time constraints,’ where students can access and submit the assignment at any time, you can customize various settings under the ‘Configure assign settings’ option.

Group 8613.png

Simply click on the ‘Configure assign settings’ button to access the following options:

  • Due on: The ‘Due on’ option, which is enabled by default, allows you to set the due date for the worksheet. Any submissions made after this date will be marked as late. Note that you cannot choose a past date as a due date.

  • Opens on: This option specifies the date and time when the worksheet will become available for students to access and begin working on. If you don’t set an open date, the worksheet will be immediately open, meaning students can start attempting it as soon as it is assigned. Note that the open date can be set to a past date; however, assigned students will not receive a notification for the task in this case.

  • Closes on: If you enable this option for a worksheet, the date and time you set here will determine the point after which students will no longer be able to make submissions. If no close date is set, students can continue submitting even after the due date until you manually close the worksheet.

  • Visibility: With the visibility option, you can choose how the worksheet will be shown to students.

    • Visible to students now: The worksheet is visible as soon as it is created.

    • Visible to students on open date and time: The worksheet becomes visible to students on the configured open date.

    • Visible to teachers only: The worksheet remains private for you and is hidden from students.

Additionally, you have the option to pin certain settings. Pinning these options makes them available in the Assign modal for future use. You can change your preferences for pinned options at any time.

In case you wish to duplicate the worksheet to other classes, click on the ‘Add another class’ option. Here you will see a list of all classes that you teach. If an assessment category is selected for the worksheet, the list will be filtered to show only classes with a matching assessment category. Select one or more classes from the list. After adding class(es), select the students within each class, and configure the assign settings for the worksheet.

The assign settings applied to all added classes will be based on your selections under the ‘Configure assign settings‘ option. If you don’t want to use a particular setting for a class, simply leave it blank. A copy of this worksheet will be created under the ‘Assignments’ section for the added class(es). This feature is especially useful when you are handling multiple classes, allowing you to assign tasks to all relevant classes with minimal clicks and effort.

Timed worksheets with a flexible start time

In a ‘Timed worksheet with a flexible start time,’ students can begin the worksheet at any time, but they must complete it within a fixed duration. Under this worksheet type, you’ll find additional options under the ‘Timed worksheet setup,’ including ‘Time duration’ and ‘Security mode.’ These options allow you to set a time limit for the assignment and configure security settings such as browser lock or lockdown applications if needed.

You’ll also have the option to add the worksheet to other classes using the ‘Add another class’ option. Additionally, you can access settings related to submission, open and close dates, and worksheet visibility under the ‘Configure assign settings’ option. These settings will work the same way as explained before in the No time constraints worksheet section.

Let’s understand the ‘Timed worksheet setup’ in detail.

Timed worksheet setup

Under the ‘Timed worksheet setup’ you can set a ‘Time duration’ and ‘Security mode’ for the worksheet. Here’s how each one of these options works:

Time duration: This option allows you to set a custom time limit for your worksheet, determining how much time each student has to complete it.

Security mode: Choose from three security settings: ‘No restriction,’ ‘Browser lock,’ and ‘Lockdown application.’ You can select the appropriate mode based on your task requirements. Here’s a brief overview of each setting:

  • No security: You can use the ‘No security feature’ for an open-book assignment where students retain access to the web and have no restrictions on switching tabs or looking up information online.

    Group 8661.png
  • Browser locking: You can use the ‘Browser locking’ feature to track how focused students are while attempting the assignment. If they switch tabs or windows, they'll need to justify each instance of navigation away from the worksheet. This functionality provides insights into the frequency and timing of students leaving the worksheet screen.

If this setting is enabled for the worksheet, students will see a pop-up window informing them that this is a locked screen worksheet before they start their assignment, as shown in the screenshot below.

    image.png
  • Lockdown application: If you choose the ‘Lockdown application’ option, students will be prompted to download Safe Exam Browser, a third-party software (verified by Toddle) that blocks them from opening any applications or browsers on their laptops while the worksheet is open. This can help reduce instances of plagiarism or unethical attempts at completing the worksheet.

Students will see an option to download the Safe Exam Browser to attempt the worksheet in lockdown application mode just as highlighted in the screenshot below.

    image.png

Once the worksheet opens in the Safe Exam Browser, students can answer all questions within the allotted time. When they click ‘Save and exit,’ their responses are recorded automatically.

If a student tries to quit midway, they will need to enter the quit password. You can find this password on the ‘All submissions’ page. It is visible only to teachers, so you’ll need to share it with the student if they need to quit Safe Exam Browser.

Note: Once quit, the student’s progress is saved, and they can resume the worksheet if the submission window is still open. When resuming, students will be required to provide a reason for leaving the worksheet earlier, which will be documented in the ‘Screen absence tracker’ column. If the submission window closes, the worksheet is automatically submitted with the progress made until that point.

Timed worksheet with fixed start time

In a ‘Timed worksheet with a fixed start time,’ all students begin the worksheet simultaneously and must complete it within the set duration. For this type of worksheet, you will see the ‘Timed worksheet setup’ section allowing you to set the Time duration and Security mode. You can add the worksheet to other classes using the ‘Add another class’ option. These options work the same way as explained above.

Since this is a fixed start time worksheet, the assignment options differ from the other types of worksheets. Here, you will find the following two key settings:

Starts on: The 'Starts on' option allows you to set a specific date and time for when all students will have to begin attempting the worksheet. Since this worksheet has a fixed start time, it will automatically close after the set duration, and no late submissions will be accepted. Note that you cannot choose a past date as the start date.

Visibility: The visibility options remain the same as the first two worksheet types. You can choose from the following:

  • Visible to students now: The worksheet is visible as soon as it is created.

  • Visible to students on open date and time: If you set a future date and time as the start time for the worksheet, you'll see this option. It ensures that students can access the worksheet only when the start date and time is reached. This option is not available if you select 'Starts now' as the start time.

  • Visible to teachers only: The worksheet remains private to you and hidden from students.

Assignment summary

Based on the assignment settings you select, a summary will be generated to provide a clear overview of key details such as the due date, submission window, and visibility settings.

For example, if you configure a ‘Timed worksheet with flexible start time’ with the following settings:

  • Due date: 3 February, 4:00 PM

  • Open date: 31 January, 10:00 AM

  • Close date: 6 February, 4:00 PM

  • Visibility: Visible on the open date

The summary will display: “The assignment will be visible on 31 January at 10:00 AM. Submissions open on 31 January at 10:00 AM and close on 06 February at 04:00 PM. Submissions made after 03 February at 04:00 PM will be considered late”. This summary ensures that teachers can easily review and verify how the worksheet will be configured and presented to students.

Furthermore, you can edit the student selection by clicking the profile icon under the ‘Students’ column and choosing one or more students from your class(es) to assign the task to.

Use the ‘Tags’ section to organize and access your worksheets easily. You can select from existing tags in the dropdown or create a new one by typing its name.

Group 8610.png

Settings section

Under the ‘Settings’ section you can configure a few additional options such as:

  1. Class discussion: Enable peer discussions for the assignment.

  2. Exclude task from final grade calculation: Exclude the task from contributing to overall scores for categories and grading periods.

  3. Add this task to ‘Class Flow’: Include the task in the ‘Class Flow’ module for the classes selected above.

  4. On-screen calculator: Include an on-screen calculator option for assignments that require calculations. Enabling this will provide students with access to a calculator directly on their worksheet screens.

  5. Choose when students can see their work: Determine when students will be able to see their submitted work—immediately after they have shared it, only once the evaluation is shared with them, or never.

Once you’ve configured the assign settings for the worksheet, you can choose to either save it as a draft or assign it immediately.

Note: If you save your worksheet as a draft, it will not be assigned to students, even if the open date or due date has passed.
