We’ve introduced the Excused functionality in assignments to give teachers more flexibility when managing student class tasks. This allows you to excuse a student from a particular assignment in cases of excused absence, special accommodations, or scheduling conflicts. Staff, students and family members will see a clear indication of this across the platform. Let’s dive into details!
This article will cover:

Marking student as ‘Excused’
As a teacher, you can go to the All submissions page for a class task and excuse a student directly from the three-dot menu using the ‘Mark as excused’ option.
Previously, this option was called Evaluation not applicable, which has now been replaced with the new excused status.
💡Please note that the ‘Mark as excused’ option will be disabled when a student is already marked as evaluated for a task.
Once a student is marked as ‘Excused’, the Excused status appears in the Assessment tools column as well as under the Evaluation and Shared columns in the submissions list. This status can be removed anytime by selecting ‘Remove excused status’ using the same three-dot menu.
When a student is marked as 'Excused':
The Turned in status (e.g., Turned in, Overdue) remains unchanged.
The Evaluation and Shared statuses are disabled and displayed as ‘Excused’‘
Any attached assessment tools are replaced with ‘Excused’‘.
Neither teachers nor students can complete evaluations for the assignment.
Existing scores, if any, for that assignment, are excluded from overall grade calculations.
You can also manage excusals in bulk. Select multiple students and use the bulk actions menu in the top bar to excuse or unexcuse them at once.
For easier tracking, a dedicated ‘Excused’ filter has been added, allowing you to quickly view all excused students for a given task.
If you open an excused student’s submission, you will see the ‘Excused’ tag next to the student’s name, and the Evaluation panel will display a message stating: ‘This student has been marked as excused.’ This replaces the usual evaluation options, which are disabled while the student remains excused.
Viewing excused assignments in the Gradebook
When a student is marked as 'Excused', the assignment is excluded from their overall grade calculations. This is reflected in the Gradebook as follows:
All assessment tool columns appear as ‘Excused’.
Even if the teacher had previously given a score or added an evaluation, marking the student as excused will remove those entries and replace them with ‘Excused’.
The row is visually greyed out, and hovering over any cell shows a tooltip saying that the student has been marked as excused.
While the excused status is active, you cannot edit or add evaluations for that student.
View at the student’s end
When a student is excused from a task, an ‘Excused’ tag appears next to the assignment under the Done tab in their Assignments section. These tasks are automatically moved from the To-do tab to the Done tab.
Students can also use a dedicated filter to view only excused tasks.
Unlike regular assignments, excused tasks do not show submission pending. However, if a student still chooses to submit, normal statuses such as ‘Turned in’ are shown.
💡 Students and their family members see the same view for excused assignments across web and mobile.
Clicking on the assignment opens the submission page, where the ‘Excused’ tag appears next to Your response. Both teacher and student evaluations are disabled and displayed as ‘Excused’.
In the gradebook, excused assignments appear greyed out with ‘Excused’ in all cells, clearly indicating they will not be evaluated.
View on the mobile app
The same flow applies to the mobile app for students:
Excused tasks are automatically moved from the To-do tab to the Done tab and are marked with an ‘Excused’ tag.
Students can also filter their assignments by status to view only excused tasks.
When students open the assignment:
In the Instructions tab, both the teacher and student evaluation fields are shown as N/A.
A banner appears in the Your response tab stating that the assignment will not be evaluated as the student has been excused.
In the Gradebook, excused assignments are clearly marked with an ‘Excused’ tag, and scores are not displayed for these tasks (if evaluated).
That's all for now. We will continue to innovate and improve to make your Toddle experience better each day!
