We are delighted to introduce a fresh revamp of the Unit flow to help you plan and manage unit content more efficiently. With enhanced flexibility in structuring your teaching and learning content and new ways to view it, this update helps you streamline your teaching process.
This article covers the following new features:
Adding sections in Unit flow
Moving items/sections to other sections
Creating duplicates for tasks and resources
Viewing options
Navigating to Unit flow
From your homepage select the class for which you wish to create a Unit flow.
💡Please note that this article uses the IBPYP curriculum as an example but the feature works the same way across all curriculums.
Within the left-hand collapsible menu, navigate to the ‘Unit planning’ section and click on the preferred unit.
Within your unit planner, navigate to the ‘Unit flow’ tab. The Unit flow tab now has a new layout, with all content organized into sections and sub-sections displayed in a clear, hierarchical structure at the center of the screen. You can choose to show or hide the outline in the left pane and access the complete list of tasks and resources from the right pane using the corresponding display options.
Let’s take a closer look at what’s new!
💡As before, this tab is for teacher use only and continues to remain hidden from the student view.
Adding sections in Unit flow
To better organize tasks and resources, you can now create sections (previously labeled as ‘Folder’) along with multiple sub-sections within each. Previously only single sections could be created in the Unit flow.
Simply click the ‘Create’ button on top and select the ‘Add a section’ option.
You can then insert a suitable title and click on the check mark to create the section.
Once the section is created, hover over it to access the ‘+’ icon and begin adding content to it.
You can even create multiple subsections by hovering over the section title and accessing the ‘+’ icon that appears. You can then add items to the sub-section using the ‘+’ icon or by dragging existing items into them. Remember that you can create a maximum of three sub-section levels under the main section.
💡Note that the process of creating content in the sections within unit flow, such as tasks and resources, remains the same as before.
Moving items/sections to other sections
Previously, while you could drag individual items/sections, you could not move them to other sections. You now have the option to move individual items or sections/sub-sections to other sections of the Unit flow using the 'Move to section' feature.
Moving an item to a section
Click on the three-dot menu next to the task/resource you wish to move. You can either drag and drop it using the drag handle (six-dot icon) or click on the 'Move to section' option in the three-dot menu.
Upon clicking on the ‘Move to section’ option, a modal appears, allowing you to choose the section or sub-section where you would like to move the selected item. Once you have made your selection, click on the 'Move here' button to proceed.
Your item will then be added to the selected section you moved it to.
Moving a section/sub-section to another section
You can also move an entire sub-section/section to another existing section. You can either drag and drop it using the drag handle (six-dot icon) or click on the 'Move to another section' option in the three-dot menu.
Upon clicking on the ‘Move to another section’ option, a modal appears, allowing you to choose the sub-section/section you would like to move the selected section to. Once done, click the 'Move here' button to proceed.
💡The hierarchy for sections/sub-sections cannot exceed 5 levels, so certain sections or sub-sections may be disabled from the list if they exceed this limit.
Your sub-section/section will then be moved to the selected section.
Creating duplicates for tasks and resources
For tasks
Previously, the Unit flow only allowed you to create a separate copy of a task. This has now been enhanced to offer two copy options - linked copy and duplicate - providing greater flexibility depending on how you wish to reuse your content. Let’s explore both these options in further detail:
Creating a linked copy: This new option allows you to add the same task to multiple sections of the Unit flow. Any edits made to the original will automatically update in all linked copies, ensuring clear consistency.
A linked copy of the task will appear, marked with a ‘link’ icon to inform that the main task exists elsewhere in the Unit flow. This ‘link’ icon will appear in all linked copies of the task, in case multiples ones are created. A tooltip also appears, explaining that any changes made to this task will automatically sync across all linked copies.
You can perform the same actions on it as the original task, including editing, moving to another section, and assigning it to students.
If you remove the linked copy, a pop-up will ask whether you would like to remove just the selected copy or all linked copies, if any, from the Unit flow. Simply check the appropriate box based on your preference and click ‘Remove’.
💡The original task will not be affected by this action.
If you choose to remove the original task that has one or more linked copies, a pop-up will notify you that all linked copies of it will also be removed from the Unit flow.
2. Create a duplicate: This option remains unchanged, allowing you to create an independent copy of the task. Changes made to the duplicate will not affect the original, giving you the flexibility to modify the task as per your needs.
Upon selecting this option, a pop-up window will prompt you to rename the duplicated task title. By default, ‘(copy)’ will be added to the task name for a clear distinction.
Once finalized, click ‘Duplicate’.
A copy of the task will appear in the same section, allowing you to perform the same actions, such as editing, moving to another section, and assigning it to students, without affecting the original task.
For resources
Previously, there was no option to duplicate a resource, such as an image, link, or note, within the Unit flow. You can now easily create a copy of any resource by selecting the provided option from the three-dot menu next to it. This allows you to reuse the same resource across different sections without the need to manually upload/create it again.
Upon selecting the option, a pop-up window will prompt you to rename the duplicated resource title. By default, ‘(copy)’ will be added to the resource name for a clear distinction.
Once finalized, click ‘Duplicate’.
A copy of the resource will appear in the same section, allowing you to perform the same actions, such as moving to another section, downloading, and removing without affecting the original resource.
Viewing options
The Unit flow now includes a range of new viewing options to help you navigate and manage your content more efficiently. These recently added features allow you to search, filter, and customize how your unit materials are displayed - making it easier to locate and access the information you need.
Search
You can easily find specific tasks, resources, or sections/sub-sections by entering the relevant title in the search bar, as shown below.
Filters
Click on the filter icon to access the following filters:
Content types: View content by type, such as learning experiences, notes, links, resources, etc.
Added by: View content added by you or all other collaborators of this unit.
Display options
Use the ‘Display’ option to customize your Unit flow view. You can choose to show the outline (on the left), including any sections and subsections you have created.
Additionally, you can collapse/expand all sections and display either the thumbnail image or the type of task, such as LE, image, etc., for the added content.
New outline view
The new outline section has been simplified to serve primarily as a viewing and navigation tool. You can no longer perform direct actions - such as editing or rearranging sections - from the outline itself. It continues to reflect the complete structure of your unit flow, including the newly supported sub-sections, and is designed to help you navigate your content quickly.
Learning experiences and resources window
You can view a list of all assessments and resources created by you within the Unit flow by clicking on the icon at the top right of the screen. A panel opens up on the right where you can view and create assessments and resources as before. Additionally, use the search bar or the filter to quickly locate specific items, as shown below.
Click on the plus icon in the right pane to import/create tasks and add resources as before. You can also drag/drop items from here into the Unit flow, as supported previously. However, unlike earlier, when a new item is created/added from this window, it will simultaneously appear in the unit flow as well. Therefore, dragging/dropping items would mean that you are creating a duplicate/linked copy of it, as the original already exists in the Unit flow.
💡This right panel is accessible across all unit planner tabs except in the ‘Evidencing’ tab.
With the updated Unit flow, when you attempt to drop a task from the right pane that already exists in the flow, a pop-up window will appear. This displays the specific section of the Unit Flow where the task is being dropped (if applicable). Additionally, it informs you that the task is already part of the Unit flow and prompts you to choose between creating a duplicate or linked copy. Note that dropping a resource will automatically create a duplicate copy, as linked copies are not supported for it, as explained earlier.
Refer back to this section for a clear understanding of these copy options.
Flexible section display
As part of the newly redesigned display, sections within a Unit flow are now collapsed by default when initially accessed. This provides a clear and organized overview without the need for unnecessary scrolling. To collapse/expand all sections, simply click the provided option from the three-dot menu, as highlighted below.
Each time you collapse or expand a section/subsection, your preferences are automatically saved when you leave the page. Accordingly, the sections are displayed based on the last collapse/expand configuration you set.
💡These configurations are saved at an individual user level, meaning that the preferences you set for a Unit flow will not apply to other teachers accessing the same.
The remaining processes, including importing or creating learning experiences, assessments, worksheets, and adding resources, continue to function in the same manner as before.
These Unit flow features ensure a smoother workflow for all your units by helping you organize and manage content efficiently.
That's all for now. We will continue to innovate and improve to make your Toddle experience better each day!
